كتابكُمْ أمْ سرورُ النفسِ والوطرُ
Is it a horizon’s bloom, or flowers and pools—
The dawn of a horizon, mother of flowers and deceits
Your letter—or the soul’s delight and desire?
Is your book the joy of soul and rapture

I read it, and it coursed through every limb,
I read it and it flowed in every limb
As though it were water and I a tree.
As if I and it were water and trees

God be praised for its radiant, sweet words! For they
To God belong its enchanting, tormenting words
Have surpassed pearls—what comparison is there in worth and grandeur?
They rose above pearls, where is might and greatness?

Whoever says, ‘They are like precious pearls,’ tell him:
Whoever says it's like precious pearls, say to him
‘You err, unless you add of them: “with no littleness.”’
You missed it if you did not say about it, not even less

My lord, my tongue falters in answering you; and what is
My Master, my tongue falls short of answering you
Hoped for is to pave the way for my excuse when I apologize.
And there is no hope that my apology will excuse me

I'm just a servant among your servants
My practice, at the outset, is a prayer whose truth is fact.
My habit from the start is a sincere prayer that informs

If the one who lifts my saddle set it above the star,
If I pitched my tent above the stars raising it
I would find there a vision of you waiting.
I'd still find an illusion of you waiting there

And the haste of the messenger whose omen is auspicious
And the blessed traveler's speed, his bird
Has required me to keep my words brief.
Made me opt for brevity in speech

I wrote it while he was passing through on a journey.
I wrote it while he was crossing on a journey
What can verse be like when travel forces haste?
What's the state of poetry when travels hasten?
لاmay ... never زلتَyou cease يجبرُmends قلباًa heart أنتَyou ساكنُهُits inhabitant
لا زلتَ يجبرُ قلباً أنتَ ساكنُهُ

May you never cease mending a heart in which you dwell,
You still comfort a heart of which you are resident
And may eminence never cease to take pride in you.
And through you the sublime continue to take pride
