إنَّindeed فخرَFakhr (glory) الدينِal-Din (of the faith) فخٌّa trap
إنَّ فخرَ الدينِ فخٌّ
أيُّwhatever سحتٍill-gotten gain لاحَappeared صادَهْhe snared it
أيُّ سحتٍ لاحَ صادَهْ
Indeed, Fakhr al-Din is a trap.
Indeed, the pride of religion is vanity
Whatever ill-gotten gain appears, he snares it.
What mischief has appeared of which he is the author
قيلَit was said ليto me والفخرُand Fakhr (glory) فخٌّa trap
قيلَ لي والفخرُ فخٌّ
قلتُI said فخٌّa trap وزيادَهْand more
قلتُ فخٌّ وزيادَهْ
I was told, “And Fakhr is a trap.”
It was said to me that pride is vanity
I said, “A trap—and more.”
I said: "Vanity and more of it"
