باسمِ إلهِ الخلْقِ هذا ما اشترى

باسمِ إلهِ الخلْقِ هذا ما اشترى

محمدٌ بنُ يونسَ بن سُنْقُرا

محمدٌ بنُ يونسَ بن سُنْقُرا

In the name of the God of creation, this is what was purchased

In the name of God, the Creator, this is what was bought

by Muhammad son of Yunus, son of Sunqur,

By Muhammad son of Yunus son of Sunqura

مِنْ مالكِ بنِ أحمدَ بنِ الأزرقِ

مِنْ مالكِ بنِ أحمدَ بنِ الأزرقِ

كلاهُما قدْ عُرفا مِنْ جلِّق

كلاهُما قدْ عُرفا مِنْ جلِّق

from Malik son of Ahmad, son of al-Azraq,

From Malik son of Ahmad son of Al-Azraq

both known to be from Jilliq.

Both well known from Jilq

فباعَهُ قطعةَ أرضٍ واقعهْ

فباعَهُ قطعةَ أرضٍ واقعهْ

بكورةِ الغوطةِ وهْيَ جامعَهْ

بكورةِ الغوطةِ وهْيَ جامعَهْ

So he sold him a plot of land situated

So he sold him a plot of land situated

in the district of al-Ghuta, containing

In Bawwabat Al-Ghouta, which has trees

لشجرٍ مختلِفِ الأجناسِ

لشجرٍ مختلِفِ الأجناسِ

والأرضُ في البيعِ معَ الغراسِ

والأرضُ في البيعِ معَ الغراسِ

trees of various kinds.

Of different kinds

And the land is included in the sale along with the plantings.

And the land with the trees was sold

وذَرْعُ هذي الأرضِ بالذراعِ

وذَرْعُ هذي الأرضِ بالذراعِ

عشرونَ في الطولِ بلا نزاعِ

عشرونَ في الطولِ بلا نزاعِ

And this land's measurement, in cubits,

The length of this plot by the cubit

is twenty in length, without dispute;

Is twenty cubits without dispute

وذَرْعُها في العرضِ أيْضاً عَشَرَهْ

وذَرْعُها في العرضِ أيْضاً عَشَرَهْ

وهْو ذِراعٌ باليدِ المعْتَبَرَهْ

وهْو ذِراعٌ باليدِ المعْتَبَرَهْ

and its breadth likewise measures ten,

And its width is also ten cubits

the cubit being reckoned by the standard hand-measure.

By the recognized cubit

وحدُّها مِنْ قِبلةٍ مِلْكُ التقي

وحدُّها مِنْ قِبلةٍ مِلْكُ التقي

وحائزُ الروميّ حدُّ المشرقِ

وحائزُ الروميّ حدُّ المشرقِ

And its boundary toward the qibla is al-Taqi's property;

It is bordered on one side by Al-Taqi’s land

and al-Rumi's holding forms the eastern boundary;

And the Roman’s land borders the east

ومِنْ شمالٍ ملكُ أولادِ علي

ومِنْ شمالٍ ملكُ أولادِ علي

والغَرْبُ مِلْكُ عامرِ بنِ جَهْبَلِ

والغَرْبُ مِلْكُ عامرِ بنِ جَهْبَلِ

and to the north is the property of Ali's children;

The north is bordered by the land of Al-Ali’s sons

and to the west, the property of Amir son of Jahbal.

And the west belongs to Amer son of Jahbal

وهذهِ تُعرَفُ مِنْ قديمٍ

وهذهِ تُعرَفُ مِنْ قديمٍ

بأنها قطعةُ بِنتِ الرومي

بأنها قطعةُ بِنتِ الرومي

And this has long been known

And this plot is known from ancient times

as the plot of al-Rumi's daughter.

As the plot of the daughter of the Roman

بيعاً صحيحاً لازماً شرعياً

بيعاً صحيحاً لازماً شرعياً

ثم شراءً قاطعاً مرعيَّا

ثم شراءً قاطعاً مرعيَّا

A valid, binding sale under Islamic law,

A valid and binding sale according to Sharia

then a definitive, duly upheld purchase,

And an absolute purchase properly conducted

بثمنٍ مبلغُهُ منْ فضهْ

بثمنٍ مبلغُهُ منْ فضهْ

وازنةٍ جيدةٍ مُبَيَّضَهْ

وازنةٍ جيدةٍ مُبَيَّضَهْ

for a price whose amount, in silver coins—

For a price of silver amounting to

full-weight, good-quality, and whitened,

Two thousand weighed and pure dirhams

جاريةٍ للناسِ في المعاملهْ

جاريةٍ للناسِ في المعاملهْ

ألفانِ منها النصفُ ألفٌ كاملهْ

ألفانِ منها النصفُ ألفٌ كاملهْ

in circulation for people's dealings—

Current among people in transactions

is two thousand, half of which is one full thousand.

One thousand of it being complete

قبضَها البائعُ منهُ وافيهْ

قبضَها البائعُ منهُ وافيهْ

فعادَتْ الذمةُ منها خاليهْ

فعادَتْ الذمةُ منها خاليهْ

The seller received it from him in full,

The seller received it in full

so the liability for it was cleared.

So the debt was cleared

وسلَّمَ الأرضَ إلى مَنْ اشترى

وسلَّمَ الأرضَ إلى مَنْ اشترى

فقبضَ القطعةَ منهُ وجَرَى

فقبضَ القطعةَ منهُ وجَرَى

And he delivered the land to its buyer,

And he handed over the land to the buyer

who took possession of the plot from him, and there followed

Who took possession of the plot from him duly

بينهما بالبدنِ التفرُّقُ

بينهما بالبدنِ التفرُّقُ

طَوْعاً فما لأحدٍ تَعَلُّقُ

طَوْعاً فما لأحدٍ تَعَلُّقُ

their physical separation from one another,

With mutual consent they parted

voluntarily, so neither retained any claim.

Willingly, neither having any remaining claim

ثمَّ ضمانُ الدركِ المشهورِ

ثمَّ ضمانُ الدركِ المشهورِ

فيهِ على بائعهِ المذكورِ

فيهِ على بائعهِ المذكورِ

Then the well-known warranty against loss of title

Then responsibility for taxes well-known

in this rests upon its aforementioned seller.

Regarding it falls on the seller aforementioned

وأشهدا عليهما بذاكَ في

وأشهدا عليهما بذاكَ في

رابعَ عَشرَ رمضانَ الأشرفِ

رابعَ عَشرَ رمضانَ الأشرفِ

And both had this transaction witnessed on

And they both testified to this on

the fourteenth of the most noble Ramadan,

The fourteenth of the noble month of Ramadan

منْ عامِ سبعمائةٍ وعشرهْ

منْ عامِ سبعمائةٍ وعشرهْ

منْ بعدِ خمسةٍ تليها الهجرَهْ

منْ بعدِ خمسةٍ تليها الهجرَهْ

of the year seven hundred and ten,

Of the year seven hundred and ten

with five added, reckoned from the Hijra.

After the Hijrah by five more years

والحمدُ للهِ وصلَّى ربِّي

والحمدُ للهِ وصلَّى ربِّي

على النبيِّ وآلِهِ والصَّحبِ

على النبيِّ وآلِهِ والصَّحبِ

And praise be to God, and may my Lord bless

And praise be to God and my Lord prayed

the Prophet, his family, and the Companions.

Upon the Prophet, his family and companions

يَشْهدُ بالمضمونِ مِنْ هذا عُمَرْ

يَشْهدُ بالمضمونِ مِنْ هذا عُمَرْ

ابنُ المظفرِ المعري إذْ حَضَرْ

ابنُ المظفرِ المعري إذْ حَضَرْ

The contents of this are attested by Umar,

Umar son of Al-Muzaffar Al-Maari witnessed

son of al-Muzaffar, al-Ma'arri, having been present.

The valid contents here when he attended

قد حضرَ العقدَ الصحيحَ أحمدُ

قد حضرَ العقدَ الصحيحَ أحمدُ

ابنُ رسولِ وبذاكَ يَشْهَدُ

ابنُ رسولِ وبذاكَ يَشْهَدُ

Indeed present at the valid contract was Ahmad,

Ahmad son of Rasool attended the valid sale and witnessed it

son of Rasul, and to this he bears witness.
