لو كنتَ محتاجاً إلى درهمٍ

If you were in need of a dirham,

If you were in need of a single coin

Then I would have a model in the praise-singer;

I would take the flatterers as role models

وكانَ مَنْ لا يعطني أهجهُ

فالحمدُ للهِ على الثروهْ

فالحمدُ للهِ على الثروهْ

And I would lampoon whoever did not give me anything.

And would shun those who do not give me
