إنْ عبتَ مَنْ أهواهُ واغْتَبْتَهُ

إنْ عبتَ مَنْ أهواهُ واغْتَبْتَهُ

مدحتُهُ عندي بما عِبْتَهُ

مدحتُهُ عندي بما عِبْتَهُ

If you faulted the one I love and spoke ill of him,

If you censure whom I love, and speak ill of him,

I praised him, in my eyes, for what you faulted him for.

I praise him in my eyes for that which you censure.

ما نلتَ خيراً في الذي قلتَهُ

ما نلتَ خيراً في الذي قلتَهُ

أغضبتني عنكَ وأغضبْتَهُ

أغضبتني عنكَ وأغضبْتَهُ

You gained no good from what you said:

You have not gained any good by what you said,

You turned me away from you in anger, and angered him.
