لو كانَ يرضى بحكمي
فيin matters of الحسْنِbeauty سودٌdark-skinned people وبيضُand fair-skinned people
في الحسْنِ سودٌ وبيضُ
If my judgment were accepted
If he were content with my rule
in matters of beauty by the dark and the fair,
Of beauty being black and white
لقلتُI would say للسودِto the dark-skinned سودواreign; be masters
لقلتُ للسودِ سودوا
وقلتُand I would say للبيضِto the fair-skinned بيضواlay eggs
وقلتُ للبيضِ بيضوا
I would say to the dark, “Reign!”
I'd have told the blacks, "Be blacker!"
and I would say to the fair, “Lay eggs!”
And told the whites, "Be whiter!"
