نونٌ وقامتُهُ ممشوقةً أَلِفُ
I would ransom him whose sidelock is a lām and whose eyebrow
I sacrifice myself for the one whose temple is wounded,
is a nūn, and whose slender stature is an alif.
His eyebrow is coquettish, his figure is slender like an Alif.
حروفُletters خطٍscript; a line of facial down مِنَin الوجهينِboth senses هنَّthey لناfor us
حروفُ خطٍ مِنَ الوجهينِ هنَّ لنا
إنَّاindeed we لَنطلبُهاwe surely seek them منهُfrom him فينحرفُand he turns away
إنَّا لَنطلبُها منهُ فينحرفُ
To us, they are letters of script in both senses;
The letters of inscription from his cheeks are,
indeed, we seek them from him, and he turns away.
We seek them yet he shies away.
