سرقْتُI stole منهاfrom her نظرةًa glance فاستضحكتْso she laughed
واستترتْand she hid عنيfrom me وسدَّتْand she shut طاقَهاher window
I stole a glance at her, and she laughed.
I stole a glance from her, so she smiled
And she hid from me and shut her window.
And hid from me, closing her window
فرمْتُso I sought منهاfrom her نظرةًa glance ثانيةًa second
فأسبَلَتْso she lowered مِنْfrom دونِهاbefore her رواقَهاher curtain
Then I sought a second glance at her,
So I stole a second glance
so she lowered her curtain in front of her.
And she let down her veil before it
كيفَhow يطيقُcan bear ساقُهاher leg خلخالَهاher anklet
ونظرةُwhile a glance الناظرِof the beholder تدميmakes bleed ساقَهاher leg
How can her leg bear her anklet,
How can her ankles bear her anklets
when a beholder's glance makes her leg bleed?
When a gazer's glance wounds her ankles

O Hind, I have a soul preoccupied with you;
O Hind I have a soul occupied with you
its death throes have driven it toward love of you.
Its way to your love led by her ankles
يقولُsays مَنْwhoever يقيسُcompares بلقيسَBilqis بهاwith her
آمرةٌcommanding ناهيةٌforbidding عشَّاقَهاher lovers
Whoever compares Bilqis with her says:
He who compares you to Balqis says
“She commands and forbids her lovers.
A commander, forbidding her lovers

وأُوتيَتْand she was given منْof كلِّevery شيءٍthing راقَهاpleased her
Indeed, I found a woman ruling over them,
I found a woman who commands them
and she was given everything that pleased her.”
And was granted perfection in all her qualities
لوif تعلمُknew الوُرْقُthe gray doves بحسنِof the beauty جيدِهاher neck
لمزَّقتْthey would tear منْfrom طربٍrapture أطواقَهاtheir collars
If the gray doves knew of the beauty of her neck,
If the leaf knew her cheek's beauty
they would tear their collars in rapture.
It would shred itself in rapture

And if my reproacher tasted her saliva,
If my critic tasted her saliva
he would fall in love alongside me—but he has not tasted it.
He would stop blaming me and taste it
