رأيتُ مليحينِ لو أُنصفا
إذاwhenever اجتمعاthey both came together عُوِّذاthey were both protected بالرقىwith incantations
إذا اجتمعا عُوِّذا بالرقى
I saw two beauties who, were they given their due,
I saw two beauties, if I judge fairly
Would be protected with incantations whenever they met:
When joined, protected by talismans
غزالَيْtwo gazelles فلاthe wilderness وهلالَيْand two crescents دجىnight's darkness
غزالَيْ فلا وهلالَيْ دجى
وشمسَيْand two suns ضحىmidmorning وقضيبَيْand two slender boughs نقاa sand dune
وشمسَيْ ضحى وقضيبَيْ نقا
Two gazelles of the wilderness, two crescents of the night,
My gazelles, not at all like the new moon's crescent
And two suns of midmorning, and two slender boughs on a dune.
My suns at noon, my rods erect
