1. عجبتُ لشيءٍ كلُّ شيءٍ يهابُهُ

    وكمْ فيهِ مِنْ نفعٍ عظيمٍ ومِنْ ضررْ

I marveled at a thing that everything fears.

And how much great benefit and harm it holds!

  2. لهُ وجنةٌ محمرَّةٌ وذوائبٌ

    طوالٌ وعنقٌ لا يلابُسُهُ قصرْ

It has a reddened cheek and tresses

Long, and a neck untouched by shortness.

  3. وسعيٌ بلا رجلٍ وبطشٌ بلا يدٍ

    وحقدٌ بلا قلبٍ وأكْلٌ بلا ثغرْ

And movement without a leg, and striking without a hand,

And rancor without a heart, and eating without a mouth.

  4. لهُ فردُ عينٍ في وجوهٍ كثيرةٍ

    ومِنْ عجبٍ أنْ ليسَ يوصفُ بالعورْ

It has a single eye amid many faces,

And, wondrously, is not called one-eyed.

  5. لهُ نقطةٌ سوداءُ مِنْ فوقِ رأسِهِ

    وهذا لعمري حليةُ الحيَّةِ الذكَرْ

It has a black dot above its head,

And this, by my life, is the male serpent's adornment.

  6. وسرَّتُهُ بالمعنيين كنخلةٍ

    سحوقٍ وخيرُ اللغزِ ما حيَّرَ الفكرْ

And its navel, in both senses, is like a palm tree

Towering high; the best riddle is one that baffles thought.

  7. تراهُ نهاراً كالبعوضةِ خسَّةً

    وبالليلِ كالطودِ الذي طالَ واشمخرْ

By day you see it as insignificant as a mosquito,

And by night, like a mountain that grew tall and towered.

  8. على أنَّهُ حامي الحمى ويضيعُ مَنْ

    يجاورُهُ هذان ضدانِ في النظرْ

Yet it guards the domain, while ruin befalls whoever

Lives beside it: these are two opposites upon reflection.

  9. يعجُّ ويُبدي أنَّةً وتحرُّقاً

    على أهلِهِ حتى يلينَ لهُ الحجرْ

It clamors, revealing a groan and burning anguish

Over its people, until stone softens for it.

  10. إذا أبدلوا بالباءِ حرفَ ختامِهِ

    ترى اسماً وفعلاً ثم حرفاً له وبرْ

If they replace its final letter with bāʾ,

You see a noun and a verb, then a 'particle' with fur.

  11. وتصحيفُهُ يا أيها العدلُ جارحٌ

    فإياكَ منهُ فَهْوَ كالوخزِ بالإبرْ

    And its dot-altered form, O just man, is a bird of prey;

So beware of it, for it is like pricking with needles.

  12. وإنَّ لهُ ضداً هوَ الخلدُ فاعجبوا

    لخلْدٍ لهُ عينانِ فَهْوَ منَ العبَرْ

And it has an opposite, eternal Paradise—so marvel

At a mole with two eyes: it is a lesson to ponder.

  13. إذا لم تجدْ في جنةِ الخلدِ حلةً

    فحذركَ يا مسكينُ تلقاهُ في سقرْ

If you find no robe in the Garden of Eternity,

Then beware, O poor soul: you will meet it in Saqar.

  14. فيا ناظراً في اللغزِ لو رمتَ كشفَهُ

    رجعْتَ إلى القولِ الذي قالَهُ عمرْ

So, O ponderer of the riddle, if you sought to uncover it,

You would return to the saying that Umar spoke.
