يقولُsays ليto me بوابُهُhis gatekeeper إذْwhen رأىhe saw
يقولُ لي بوابُهُ إذْ رأى
بالبابِat the door منِّىon my part وِقفةَa stance الحائِرِthe bewildered one
بالبابِ منِّى وِقفةَ الحائِرِ
His gatekeeper says to me, on seeing
His doorkeeper said to me when he saw
me standing bewildered at the door:
Me standing confused at the door:
لهُhe has مخازيمُbundles of records بهاwith them شغلُهُhis work
لهُ مخازيمُ بها شغلُهُ
قلتُI said مخازيمُbundles of records بلاwithout آخرِthe final letter
قلتُ مخازيمُ بلا آخرِ
“He has bundles of records—makhāzīm—to keep him busy.”
"He has affairs that occupy him."
I said, “Makhāzīm without its last letter: makhāzī—disgraces.”
I said: "Affairs without end!"
