تعوَّدَhe became accustomed to أخذَtaking السحتِillicit gain حتىto the point that لوَانَّهُeven if he
تعوَّدَ أخذَ السحتِ حتى لوَانَّهُ
أرادَhe wanted انقباضاًrestraint لمdid not تطعْهُobey him أناملُهْhis fingertips
أرادَ انقباضاً لم تطعْهُ أناملُهْ
He grew so accustomed to taking illicit gain that even if he
He grew accustomed to grasping forbidden gain
wanted to hold back, his fingertips would not obey him.
Though his fingers refused to contract as he wished
ويسمحُand he gives freely بالمالِwith wealth الحرامِunlawful لسمعةٍfor reputation
ويسمحُ بالمالِ الحرامِ لسمعةٍ
ودلَّتْand indicated علىto فعلِthe act of الزناءِfornication دلائلُهْhis telltale signs
ودلَّتْ على فعلِ الزناءِ دلائلُهْ
And he gives freely of unlawful wealth for reputation,
And he allowed illicit money for reputation
and his telltale signs attest to his committing fornication.
And signs pointed to his committing adultery
ولوْand if أنَّthat ماwhat فيin كفِّهِhis palm غيرother than جيفةٍcarrion
ولوْ أنَّ ما في كفِّهِ غير جيفةٍ
لَشَحَّhe would surely be stingy بهاwith it فليتقِso let him fear اللهَGod سائلُهْthe one who asks him
لَشَحَّ بها فليتقِ اللهَ سائلُهْ
And if what he held in his hand were anything but carrion,
And were it not for what was in his palm being carrion
he would surely withhold it—so let whoever asks him fear God.
He would be stingy with it, so let his questioner fear God
