رأى حلباً بلداً داثراً

فزادَ لإصلاحِها حرصَهُ

He saw Aleppo, a city in ruins,

So he increased his zeal to restore it.

وقادَ الجيوشَ لفتحِ البلادِ

وقادَ الجيوشَ لفتحِ البلادِ

ودقَّ لقهرِ العدى فحصهُ

ودقَّ لقهرِ العدى فحصهُ

And he led the armies to conquer the lands,

And to subdue the foes, his scrutiny grew meticulous.

وما بعدَ هذا سوى عزلِهِ

وما بعدَ هذا سوى عزلِهِ

إذا أمر تمَّ بدا نقصهُ

إذا أمر تمَّ بدا نقصهُ

Yet after this comes nothing but his dismissal:

When a matter reaches completion, its decline appears.
