  1. ما المردُ أكبرُ همِّي

    ولا نهايةُ علمي

    Beardless youths are not my greatest concern,

    Nor the furthest reach of my knowledge.

  2. ولستُ منْ قومِ لوطٍ

    حاشا تقايَ وحلمي

    And I am not of Lot's people—

    Far be it from my piety and self-restraint!

  3. وإنما خَرْجُ دهري

    كذا فنفَّقْتُ نظمي

    But what suits my age

    Is this; so I made my verse marketable.
