    The eye is heedless, yet wakeful,

    And tears are faithful and plentiful.

    So be cruel and gentle in love,

    For the heart complains, yet gives thanks.

    And be sweet and bitter, my lords,

    For patience is distant and inadequate.

    How strange that my tears should flow,

    While love forbids and rebukes.

    أفمثلُ صابٍ صابرُ

    I yearn without patient restraint;

    Can, then, one so lovesick be patient?

    O people of Badr, among you

    Is a drowsy one, reaching out and fragrant.

    He banishes slumber, and from the one

    Who loves him, he flees.

    Among the beauties, none is his equal:

    Lush, lovely, dazzling.

    فالوجهُ زاهٍ زاهرُ

    His face is my guidance and my error;

    For the face is splendid and radiant.

    Enough, O my reproacher; leave me be,

    For reproach is abject and futile.
