بيI am smitten with أغيدٌa graceful, supple youth لوeven if بَذَلْتُI offered نفسيmy life
بي أغيدٌ لو بَذَلْتُ نفسي
فيin exchange for قبلةٍa kiss منهُfrom him لمْnot أنلْهاI obtain it
في قبلةٍ منهُ لمْ أنلْها
I am smitten with a graceful youth; were I to offer my life
For a kiss from him, I would not obtain it.
قلتُI said لهُto him بينَamong عاشقيهhis lovers
قلتُ لهُ بينَ عاشقيه
أتاجرٌa merchant? أنتَyou قالhe said بالْهاwith hāʾ (turning tājir, ‘merchant,’ into hājir, ‘forsaker’)
أتاجرٌ أنتَ قال بالْها
I said to him among his lovers,
“Are you a merchant?” He said, “With hāʾ, not tāʾ—a forsaker.”
