Damascus—say what you will of her beauty,
Damascus, say what you will of her beauty,
and tell of al-Rabwa whatever you may tell.
And tell of the meadow what tales it imparts,
فالطيرُfor the bird قدindeed غنَّىsang علىupon عودِهِits bough (a pun on its lute)
فالطيرُ قد غنَّى على عودِهِ
فيin الروضِthe garden بينَbetween الدفِّthe tambourine والجنكand the harp
في الروضِ بينَ الدفِّ والجنك
For the bird has sung upon its bough—its lute—
For the birds have sung sweetly their songs
in the garden, between the tambourine and the harp.
In the garden amid lutes and hookahs
