May you be blessed with a coming year, turning

toward you with good fortune and a life grown sweet.

My lord, you whose heart is merciful,

and who, of all people, most ought to act justly:

My love bids me remain here,

while my circumstances bid me depart.

I expected advancement in your days,

and never feared that Time would bring me low.

So I said, ‘Who, then, would accept my obscurity?’

And you proved to be the gracious benefactor.

You have mastered, in your days, selling and

exchange, and whatever guards the gate of patronage.

marks a starting point. Are you that?’ He said, ‘No.

I am ilā.’ I said, ‘Ilā means a blessing,

and its plural, among people, is ālāʾ.

Where is the blessing in one who severs,

by his nearness, what ought to be joined?’

Take care not to overlook the proper interpretation.’

He said, ‘Depart!’ I said, ‘My departure, according to

the grammarians’ doctrine, would not be fitting.

For justice and definiteness are mine, and I hold

a place in grammar that will not go unrecognized.’

post; dismissal, I think, is more fitting.’

you have brought; so treat me graciously.’

He said, ‘How many a heart, over an office,

has roasted in reproach’s fire until it found solace!’

you substituted for it has a deserted dwelling.’

left to waste, neglected in the high wilderness,

while the ignorant traitor holds a

lofty office—and I accept it? No, by the Lord of the heights!

you were entrusted with, so it chose your obscurity.

    Honor, looks, intelligence—do you not

excuse it for envy that led it astray?’

So when he said what he said,

your messenger made clear what had been baffling.

so promote the deficient and the most ignorant!

By God, never again shall I exercise

judicial authority—and who would accept such affliction?
