I have indeed abandoned their contracts and annulments,

and their inheritance shares, and judging between two people.

And I have kept to my home, content and studying

the books of the sciences—and that is the finest adornment.

In jurisprudence, I love subtle distinctions,

for through them the two texts can be rightly distinguished.

And in grammatical analysis I love what is obscure

to a half-trained grammarian and a passing eye.

And in the science of rhetorical embellishment I express meanings

    shared between eloquence and me.

And I have given up composing poetry, save rarely—

say, a couplet in a year, or two.

Poetry does not equal noble learning in eminence,

for in learning lies the happiness of both abodes.
