فقلتُ وقد أنكرتُ منه مقالةً

فقلتُ وقد أنكرتُ منه مقالةً

وغرتُ لها ويلاه مِنْ سوءِ حالِها

وغرتُ لها ويلاه مِنْ سوءِ حالِها

So I said, having taken exception to a remark of his,

And felt indignant on her behalf—alas for her wretched state!

ألا طالَ ما كانت أسرةُ ملكِها

ألا طالَ ما كانت أسرةُ ملكِها

مكللةً بالدرِّ قبلَ زَوالِها

مكللةً بالدرِّ قبلَ زَوالِها

Ah, for so long the thrones of her realm were

Crowned with pearls before her downfall.

وكم خفقَتْ فيها البنودُ وَكَمْ حَوَتْ

وكم خفقَتْ فيها البنودُ وَكَمْ حَوَتْ

ملوكاً ترى الجوزاءَ تحتَ نعالِها

ملوكاً ترى الجوزاءَ تحتَ نعالِها

And how often banners fluttered within her, and how many she held—

Kings beneath whose sandals you could see al-Jawza!

معظّمةٌ في الملَّتين بحسنِها

معظّمةٌ في الملَّتين بحسنِها

مكرَّمةُ في الدولتين بمالِها

مكرَّمةُ في الدولتين بمالِها

Revered in both faiths for her beauty,

Honored under both dynasties for her wealth.

ألمْ تحترمْ فيها حبيباً نزيلَها

ألمْ تحترمْ فيها حبيباً نزيلَها

وما أنتَ لو أنصفتني من رِجالِها

وما أنتَ لو أنصفتني من رِجالِها

Did you not honor Habib there, her resident?

And you, were you fair to me, are not one of her men.

وسافرتُ إذْ نافرتُ في الحال منشداً

وسافرتُ إذْ نافرتُ في الحال منشداً

وعينايَ كلٌّ أُسعدت بسجالِها

وعينايَ كلٌّ أُسعدت بسجالِها

And when I quarreled, I departed at once, reciting,

While each of my eyes aided me with its torrents of tears:

قفا نبكِ مِنْ ذكرى حبيبٍ ومنزلِ

قفا نبكِ مِنْ ذكرى حبيبٍ ومنزلِ

لقد هزلَتْ حتى بدا مِن هزالِها

لقد هزلَتْ حتى بدا مِن هزالِها

Halt, you two; let us weep at the memory of a beloved and a dwelling.

Indeed, she grew so thin that, from her wasting, there appeared...
