إن انقطعنا فالعتابُ الثقيلْ

إن انقطعنا فالعتابُ الثقيلْ

وإنْ حضرنا فالحجابُ الطويلْ

وإنْ حضرنا فالحجابُ الطويلْ

If we stay away, the reproach is heavy;

If we're estranged, then heavy is the blame;

And if we come, the barrier lasts long;

If we meet, a lengthy veil's between our hearts;

وإنْ دخلنا فالودادُ القليلْ

وإنْ دخلنا فالودادُ القليلْ

واللهِ قَدْ حِرنا فصبرٌ جميلْ

واللهِ قَدْ حِرنا فصبرٌ جميلْ

And if we enter, affection is scant;

If we're united, scant's affection's flame;

By God, we are indeed bewildered—so let us have gracious patience.

By God! Perplexed am I, but patience calms all smarts.
