أيها المولى الأجلُّ

لكَ في قلبي محلُّ

O most august master,

O most exalted lord,

you have a place within my heart.

حلَّلوا عنكَ سلوِّي

وَهْوَ عندي لا يحلُّ

They have deemed my forgetting you permissible,

They declared my forgetting you lawful,

yet in my eyes it is not lawful.

كيف أسلو عنك فوقَ خدٍّ

كيف أسلو عنك فوقَ خدٍّ

فوقَ خدٍّ لكَ نملُ

فوقَ خدٍّ لكَ نملُ

How could I forget you? Upon a cheek—

above a cheek of yours—are ant-like dark beauty marks.

ليس يخلو منكَ قلبٌ

ليس يخلو منكَ قلبٌ

منكَ قلبٌ ليس يخلو

منكَ قلبٌ ليس يخلو

Never is my heart empty of you;

No heart is free of you;

of you my heart is never empty.

of you, no heart is free.

أنت كلٌّ لستَ بعضاً

أنت كلٌّ لستَ بعضاً

لستَ بعضاً أنتَ كلُّ

لستَ بعضاً أنتَ كلُّ

You are my whole, not merely a part;

You are the whole, not a part;

not merely a part—you are the whole.

not a part—you are the whole.

أصبحَ الردفُ غنيَّاً

أصبحَ الردفُ غنيَّاً

منكَ والخضرُ مقلُّ

منكَ والخضرُ مقلُّ

The haunch has grown plump and rich—

The rump has grown rich

yours—while the waist stays poor and spare.

from you, while al-Khiḍr is poor.

يا عليَّاً يتوالى

يا عليَّاً يتوالى

فيه دمعي المستهِلُّ

فيه دمعي المستهِلُّ

O lofty one, one after another fall

O Ali, in succession come

for him—my freely streaming tears.

my streaming tears for him.
