What do the muftis say of the love-bewitched,

amid white throats and black eyelids?

and union, and as a letter of length and softness.

Would that a wāw from his temple-curl were a wāw of conjunction,

not of aversion, nor of binding an oath.

And he has a long eyebrow shaped like nūn,

coupled with death and with wishes.

He gathered lovers with wāw and nū—

—n, yet they were not safe from a wāw and a nūn.

How much languor in his wine-dazed eyelid,

and how many arts in the wine-seller of his gaze!

And how many lie stricken by his honeyed saliva,

and how many pierced by his cheek’s quivering spear!

—m, and a forelock combed like sīn.

I asked, “What are Those Sent Forth?” He said, “My glances.”

He asked, “What are the Scatterers?” I said, “My eyelids.”

Indeed, my patience, my moaning, and my love for him

are frail, spread abroad, and guarded, respectively.
