أتعتادُdo you habitually practice التكاسلَidleness والتصابيand affecting youthful ways
إذاwhen اعتادَgrew accustomed to الفتىthe young man خوضَplunging into المناياdeadly perils
Do you make a habit of idleness and youthful folly,
When a young man grows used to braving death?
حُرمْتَyou were deprived of قيامَstanding in prayer ليلٍat night فيin خشوعٍhumble devotion
وأنتَwhile you المرءُthe man تُمرضهُmake him ill الحشاياthe mattresses
You have been denied night prayer in humble devotion,
Though you are a man whom mattresses sicken.
أمنْتَhave you felt safe from سهامَthe arrows of دهرِكyour fate حيتas ترميthey strike
وهلْand does يخطيit miss بأسهمِهِwith its arrows الرماياthe targets
Have you felt safe from your fate’s arrows as they strike?
And does it ever miss its targets with its arrows?
لقيتَyou met الناسَpeople فيin غشٍّdeceit فهاهُمْso here they are
لقوكَthey met you بأكبُدِwith the livers of الإبلِthe camels الأباياthat refuse water
You met people with deceit; now here they are:
They met you with the livers of camels that refuse water.
فكمْso how much تهديyou give as gifts لقومِكَto your people مِنْof سبابٍabuse
ولستُand I am not بمنكرٍone who denies منكَfrom you الهداياthe gifts
How much abuse you give your people as gifts!
And I do not deny the gifts that come from you.
أماwill you not تبقيyou leave لصلْحٍfor reconciliation مِنْany مكانٍroom
ولوand if لمnot تبقِyou spared لمnot تعشِwould survive البقاياthe remnants
Will you not leave any room for reconciliation?
Had you spared nothing, no remnant would have survived.
فلوfor if للذنبِfor sin ريحٌa smell لافتضحناwe would be exposed
وأُسقطتand would be miscarried الأجنةُthe fetuses فيin الولاياthe saddlecloths
For if sin had a smell, we would be exposed,
And fetuses would be miscarried among the saddlecloths.
فعلْتَyou committed الذنبَsin بعدَafter الذنبِsin جهلاًin ignorance
وهانَand it grew trivial فماso not تباليyou care بالرزاياabout calamities
You committed sin after sin in ignorance,
And it grew trivial to you, so you care nothing for calamities.
فلاso do not تركبُyou ride مطاياthe mounts of الجهلِignorance إنيindeed I
أحاذرُI fear أنْthat تشقَّyou cause hardship علىto المطاياthe mounts
So do not ride the mounts of ignorance; I
Fear that you may overburden the mounts.
وكمْand how many قدْindeed أفنتِhas destroyed الدنياthe world مليكاًa king
بعيدَfar-reaching in الصيتِrenown مُنْبَثَّwith far-flung السراياmilitary detachments
And how many a king this world has destroyed,
Of far-reaching fame, with far-flung detachments!
إذاwhen قالَsays الجهولُthe ignorant man الناسُpeople مثليlike me
تفرِّقُهمset them apart وإياهُand him السجاياinnate natures
When the ignorant man says, “People are like me,”
Their innate natures set them apart from him.
فمنْso who ليfor me بالمتابِwith repentance لعلَّperhaps نفسيmy soul

Who can bring me repentance? Perhaps my soul
Will be soothed by a skilled physician of ailments.
