هكذا كنْ محبةً واحتفالاً

هكذا كنْ محبةً واحتفالاً

واعصِ فينا الوشاةَ والعذَّالا

واعصِ فينا الوشاةَ والعذَّالا

Be thus, in love and devoted care,

Be love and celebration among us

And defy the slanderers and reproachers concerning us.

And defy the slanderers and fault-finders

لكَ منّا تكتُّمٌ واستتارٌ

لكَ منّا تكتُّمٌ واستتارٌ

ولنا منكَ أن تطيلَ السؤالا

ولنا منكَ أن تطيلَ السؤالا

From us you have secrecy and concealment;

You have our concealment and hiding

And you owe us persistence in asking.

And we have from you prolonged questioning

إنَّ لله في الوجودِ وجوهاً

إنَّ لله في الوجودِ وجوهاً

تركَتْ حسنَها لهُ والجمالا

تركَتْ حسنَها لهُ والجمالا

Indeed, God has faces in existence,

God has in existence faces

That have surrendered their loveliness and beauty to Him.

Whose beauty He left to Him and beauty

فاعلموا أنَّ في الزوايا خبايا

فاعلموا أنَّ في الزوايا خبايا

وافهموا أنَّ في السويدا رجالا

وافهموا أنَّ في السويدا رجالا

So know that in the corners lie hidden things,

So know that in the corners are secrets

And understand that in al-Suwayda there are men.

And understand that in al-Suwayda are men

أقحموا النفسَ في مهالكِ زهدٍ

أقحموا النفسَ في مهالكِ زهدٍ

يفترسْنَ الأرْواحَ والأموالا

يفترسْنَ الأرْواحَ والأموالا

They thrust the self into the deadly perils of asceticism,

Who plunged themselves into ascetic perils

Which devour souls and wealth.

That prey on souls and possessions

قصدوا هدمَ سورِها فبَنَوْه

قصدوا هدمَ سورِها فبَنَوْه

وأتوا كي يقصِّروهُ فطالا

وأتوا كي يقصِّروهُ فطالا

They sought to demolish its wall, yet built it up,

They intended to destroy its wall so they built it

And came to lower it, yet it grew tall.

And came to shorten it but it lengthened

أنفسٌ أكرمُ النُّفوسِ على الل

أنفسٌ أكرمُ النُّفوسِ على الل

هِ وأقوى حَوْلاً وأقوَمُ حالا

هِ وأقوى حَوْلاً وأقوَمُ حالا

Souls, the noblest of souls in the sight of

Souls most generous of souls to God

God, and strongest in power and most upright in state.

And strongest in might and most upright in state

فهي تمشي مَشْيَ العروسِ اختيالا

فهي تمشي مَشْيَ العروسِ اختيالا

وتهادى على الزمانِ دلالا

وتهادى على الزمانِ دلالا

So they walk with a bride's gait, proudly,

So it walks the walk of a coy bride

And sway across time with coy grace.

And sways upon time coquettishly

نحنُ قومٌ يعيشُ مَنْ ماتَ فينا

نحنُ قومٌ يعيشُ مَنْ ماتَ فينا

مستهاماً ويبلغُ الآمالا

مستهاماً ويبلغُ الآمالا

We are a people: whoever dies among us lives,

We are a people who lives when one dies among us

Love-stricken, and attains his hopes.

Aspiring and reaching hopes

عشْ على حبنا ومتْ في هوانا

عشْ على حبنا ومتْ في هوانا

هكذا هكذا وإلاّ فلا لا

هكذا هكذا وإلاّ فلا لا

Live on love for us, and die in passion for us,

Live on our love and die in our disgrace

Thus, thus—or else, no, no!

Thus, thus and not otherwise
