The letter has arrived—nay, reproach; nay, bounty,

Nay, the fulfillment of hopes and desires.

It tells of faithful affection and acquaints the

love-stricken, yearning one with a gentle reproach.

O you who imagined I had forgotten you,

Far be it from me to forget the foremost of friends!

No, by Him who bestowed on you every virtue

And graced you with kindness and refinement!

I truly yearn for you, and reproach

my fate for your absence, for it is a whip of torment.

So pardon me if I fall short; stay well for me, and live on,

O peerless one among men of merit and writers!
