Bahadur is my slave: neither splendor nor pearls.

So I am not free the day I tell him, 'You are free.'

With a wrong; no secret stays hidden with him.

Burdensome, light-fingered with whatever I entrust to him,

Pouncing on my money as a leopard pounces.

Every day he has some turmoil or complaint,

And 'he said' and 'it was said'—thus unbelief creeps in.

He has a ravenous appetite for eating and drinking, with no

Equal except the oven made ravenous by stoking.

In anger, hoping the sediment will cloud it.

Do you aid Iblis against yourself? What help is that?'

Was wheat washed for the Guide and his companions?'

He tells me, 'Live roughly: a free man may be tried.'

'Perfume and fragrance are unseemly for one who cannot live forever.'

And tossed aside; neither folding nor spreading them interests him.

O most capable of servants, what have you to do with pride?

Nor is his beauty radiant, nor are his teeth pearls,

I hoped for benefit through him, but harm befell me.

But he exhausted me, by God, and captivity changed sides.

I would have said, 'Time punishes me for my disobedience.'

You are mistaken—this is not two tenths of it, nor even one tenth.

To me; the buyer has good cause to return him.

I would do it; but I fear the evil would grow.

    فقدْ سرَّني أنْ لا يطولَ لهُ عمرُ

    My release from him is remote, except through his death;

So I am pleased that his life should not be long.
