Say to those who envied my eminence and fame:

Is a lion frightened by the barking of dogs?

You are not my equals, nor is your deficiency the source of

My excellence; nor are your means my means.

If you would stay within your bounds,

You would be freed from terror and torment.

I am the knight of verse and prose—do

Meanings flow beneath any stirrups but mine?

My verse is free from greed; it was guarded by

My Lord, who did not make it my means of earning a living.

And even if you imitate some of my verse, you do not

Match me in learning and letters.

Were I to abandon poetry, rent would be

Its veils, and it would become like a mirage's gleam.

How long shall I toil while you play? Have you not seen

That I am a man of tireless study, and such is my wont?

So cease blaming me, then blame the people, since

They have become engrossed in their questions and my answers.

    فارضَوا بقسمةِ عادلٍ وهَّابِ

    Knowledge is mine, and worldly prestige is yours;

So be content with the allotment of a just, bountiful Giver.

How often have poets carried off the finery of my speech!

May both hands of anyone not in my ranks perish!
