سطرٌ بأعلاهُ عجبْ

At the gate of Aleppo’s Firdaws,

At the gate of Aleppo's paradise

a wondrous line is inscribed at its top:

A line above it is a wonder

فيه صحافٌ من ذهبْ

فيه صحافٌ من ذهبْ

هُنَّ صحافٌ منْ ذَهَبْ

هُنَّ صحافٌ منْ ذَهَبْ

“Within it are platters of gold”—

In it are plates of gold

they are the platters of those who have gone.
