so I became abased before him for all my days.

فوا أسفا كيفَ أودعتُهُ

ليومِ العداوةِ سيفاً صقيلا

Alas! How could I have entrusted him

Alas, how bitterly I rue

with a polished sword for the day of enmity?

Entrusting to a foe my naked sword!
