ومَكاريٍّand a muleteer ماطلْتُهُI put him off
ومَكاريٍّ ماطلْتُهُ
بِكِراهfor his fare قالhe said مُذكِّراreminding
بِكِراه قال مُذكِّرا
And a muleteer whom I kept waiting
I deceived the devious one
for his fare said, reminding me:
Reluctantly, he reminded
مَنْwho يرتضيis pleased بشمائليwith my qualities
مَنْ يرتضي بشمائلي
إنيindeed I أطالبُdemand بالكِراfor the fare
إني أطالبُ بالكِرا
“Who is pleased with my ways?
Whoever accepts my character
I demand the fare.”
I demand generosity
