ومليحٍand a handsome one إذاwhen النحاةُthe grammarians رأَوْهُthey see him
ومليحٍ إذا النحاةُ رأَوْهُ
فضَّلوهُthey prefer him علىto بديعِmarvel of الزمانِthe age
فضَّلوهُ على بديعِ الزمانِ
And a handsome one—when the grammarians see him,
When grammarians see him, they give him preference
They prefer him to Badiʿ al-Zaman,
Over the most eloquent of the age,
برضابٍwith sweet saliva عنfrom المبرِّدal-Mubarrid يرويnarrates
برضابٍ عن المبرِّد يروي
ونهودٍand breasts تَرويnarrate عنfrom الرمانيal-Rummani
ونهودٍ تَروي عن الرماني
With sweet saliva that narrates on al-Mubarrid’s authority,
With chains of transmission from Al-Mubarrad he relates,
And breasts that narrate on al-Rummani’s authority.
And breasts that relate on the authority of Ar-Rummani.
