وصاحبٍ قدْ جاءَنا مُهدياً

هديةٌ حثَّتْ على رَدِّهِ

هديةٌ حثَّتْ على رَدِّهِ

And a companion came to us bearing a gift—

A friend who came bearing gifts,

a gift that prompted us to turn him away:

Offerings that called for reciprocation-

مِنْ بندقٍ أفرغَ مِنْ رأسِهِ

مِنْ بندقٍ أفرغَ مِنْ رأسِهِ

ومَلْبَنٍ أثخنَ مِنْ جلدِهِ

ومَلْبَنٍ أثخنَ مِنْ جلدِهِ

hazelnuts emptier than his head,

Hazelnuts poured from his head,

and malban sweets thicker than his skin.

Curds clotted from his skin.
