إني وقفتُ سبيلاً قد رجوتُ بِهِ

مثوبةً فاعتدالي قَدْ أمالكُم
Indeed, I endowed a public way, hoping through it
I endowed a public fountain, hoping thereby
for my divine reward; yet my uprightness has made you veer.
for a reward; yet my uprightness has made you swerve.

فقلتُso I said خلُّواleave clear سبيليmy path لاno أباfather لكمfor you
فقلتُ خلُّوا سبيلي لا أبا لكم
You opposed it, foolishly, in a way that displeased me,
Foolishly, you opposed it with what displeased me,
so I said: “Clear my way—may you be fatherless!”
so I said, “Leave my path clear—may you have no father!”
