طارتْtook flight لقلعِto uproot القلاعِthe fortresses زلزلةٌan earthquake
ماnot خشيتْfeared رامياًan archer ولاnor صائدْa hunter
An earthquake took flight to uproot the fortresses.
An earthquake shook the foundations of fortresses,
It feared neither an archer nor a hunter.
Fearing no archer or hunter.
إذاwhen درىknew الحصنُthe fortress مَنْwho رماهُhurled at it بهاwith it
خرَّfell لهُbefore him فيat أساسهِits foundation ساجدْprostrate
When the fortress knows who hurled the quake at it,
When the citadel knew who cast it,
It falls prostrate before him at its foundation.
It fell prostrate at its base in homage.
إنْif هربواthey fled أُدركواthey were overtaken وإنand if وقفواthey stood firm
خشواthey feared ذهابَthe loss of الطريفِnewly acquired wealth والتالدْand inherited wealth
If they flee, they are overtaken; and if they stand firm,
If they flee they shall be caught, if they stand still
They fear losing their newly acquired and inherited wealth.
They shall fear the loss of the sharp and taut bowstring.
فالأمرُfor the matter للهِbelongs to God رُبَّmany a مجتهدٍdiligent person
ماnot خابَfailed إلاّexcept لأنَّهُbecause he جاهدْstrove
For the matter rests with God; many a diligent man
For the command belongs to God, Lord of all who strive;
Has failed only because he strove.
None fails except for he who struggles vainly.
