معلّمٌ كالبدرِ مِنْ حولِهِ

معلّمٌ كالبدرِ مِنْ حولِهِ

كواكبٌ ترقبُ أوقاتا

كواكبٌ ترقبُ أوقاتا

A teacher, like the full moon, with all around him

A teacher like the full moon; around him

stars keeping watch upon the hours.

stars watch for moments.

قلتُ لهُ نفسُكَ ترضى اللقا

قلتُ لهُ نفسُكَ ترضى اللقا

أوَ أَبَتْ ألفٌ باءٌ تا

أوَ أَبَتْ ألفٌ باءٌ تا

I said to him, “Would your soul consent to our meeting,

I said to him, “Does your soul consent to a meeting,

or has it refused—alif, bāʾ, tāʾ?”

or has it refused? Alif, ba, ta.”
