كبدٌa liver معذَّبةٌtormented وقلبٌand a heart خافقٌthrobbing
وحشاشةٌand a remnant of life نضجَتْhas been seared ودمعٌand tears دافقُpouring forth
A tormented liver and a throbbing heart,
My liver is tortured, and my heart beats rapidly,
And life's last remnant seared, and streaming tears;
The firewood has ignited, and my tears flow,
وعذولُand a reproacher سوءٍof ill intent زادَincreased قلبيmy heart وجعةًpain
ماwhat ضرَّهُwould harm him لوif أنهُthat he بيَwith me رافقُgentle
And an ill-natured reproacher has increased my heart's pain—
The reproaches of the wicked increased my heart's agony,
What harm would it do him if he were gentle with me?
If only he accompanied me, he would not be harmed.
ياO سيداًmaster فتَنَbewitched الورىhumankind بجمالِهِwith his beauty
نوميmy sleep لِبُعْدكَbecause of your distance عَنْfrom جفونيmy eyelids طالقُdivorced
O master who has bewitched humankind with his beauty,
O master who seduced the world with his beauty,
My sleep, because you are far away, is divorced from my eyelids.
My sleep is prolonged due to your absence from my eyelids.
قسماًan oath بليلةِby the night وصلِناof our union بِطُوَيْلِعٍat Ṭuwayliʿ
إنيindeed I إلىfor لمحاتِglimpses وجهِكَof your face شائقُyearning
I swear by the night of our union at Ṭuwayliʿ:
I swear by the night of our union in Tuwayli',
Indeed, I yearn for glimpses of your face.
I long for the glances of your face.
لوif قلتَyou said للعشاقِto the lovers موتواdie لوعةًof burning anguish
وصبابةًand ardent longing بانَwould become evident المحبُّthe lover الصادقُtrue
If you told the lovers, “Die of burning anguish
If you told the lovers to die of passion,
and ardent longing,” the true lover would be revealed.
The sincere lover would obey and perish.
