كاتبٌa scribe علَّقَensnared قلبيmy heart
كاتبٌ علَّقَ قلبي
منْfrom عذاريهِhis two sideburns سطورُlines
منْ عذاريهِ سطورُ
A scribe—my heart was ensnared
A writer hung my heart
by lines of down along his cheeks.
From the strings of his lines
قالَhe said ليto me أكتبُI write ثلثاًthuluth script; a third
قالَ لي أكتبُ ثلثاً
قلتُI said والثلثُand a third كثيرْmuch
قلتُ والثلثُ كثيرْ
He told me, “I write in thuluth (‘one-third’).”
He told me to write a third
I said, “And a third is much.”
I said a third is too much
