ضُرَّةٌa rival co-wife للشمسِto the sun والبدرِand the full moon فَلَوْso if
أدركتْهاcaught up with her ضُرتاهاher two co-wives ضَرتاهاthey both harmed her
A rival to the sun and the full moon—so if
The sun and moon are vexed by her, if only
her two co-wives caught up with her, they would harm her.
Their vexations could reach her, it would suffice
بكَagainst you ياO عاشقُlover منهاfrom her تهمةٌa suspicion
لوif أباحتْshe granted لكَto you فاهاher mouth لكفاهاit would surely suffice her
You, O lover, are under suspicion from her;
Oh lover, you are blamed for longing after her
if she granted you her mouth, it would suffice her.
If she allowed you her mouth, it would be enough
وسويداؤكَand your heart's dark core فيهاin it غلةٌa burning thirst
لوif تدانَتْdrew near شفتاهاher two lips شفتاهاthey both healed it
And in your heart's dark core is a burning thirst;
Your blackness against her fairness is a flaw
if her two lips drew near, they would heal it.
If her lips met yours, they would suffice
غُضَّlower مِنْof طرفِكَyour gaze إنْif قابلْتَهاyou met her
كلُّevery نفسٍsoul مقلتاهاher two eyes مقتلاهاits two places of death
Lower your gaze if you meet her:
Lower your gaze if you encounter her
for every soul, her two eyes are its twin places of death.
Every soul who sees her is destroyed
ليسdoes not يدريknow الأمنَsafety مَنْwhoever لمhas not يرهاsee her
ودرىand knew مَنْwhoever قَدْindeed رآهاsaw her قَدْindeed رآهاsaw her
Whoever has not seen her does not know safety;
Who hasn't seen her doesn't know safety
and whoever has seen her knows—he has indeed seen her.
Who has seen her knows, has truly seen
