A greeting like the fragrance of a garden visited at dawn by rain,

and gentler than the breeze’s passing, and sweeter,

upon a generous man; ever since I heard of his renown,

I wrestle with longing for him, and longing is stronger.

Will someone convey a greeting to the chief judge—

one reserved for him, for he is loving and beloved?

    إمامُ الهدى نائي المدى متقرّبُ

    Great in generosity, a refuge from death, a vexation to foes;

a leader in right guidance, far-reaching yet drawing near.

So, O honored seat of judgment, pray: perhaps

you will obtain from him what you hope for and seek.

May he turn kindly toward you and return,

for the chief judge’s anger has lasted long.

Lavish in bounty, encompassing the utmost, comprehensive

in his elucidation of the meaning of clear expression, and held in favor.

And indeed, relinquishing the judgeship brings him rest,

but, by God, the people’s hearts grow weary.

For who else among mankind can you keep close without overlooking

his flaws? What man is faultless?
