فولٌfava beans بفلسٍfor a fils (a small coin) غداءًfor lunch

A bean for his breakfast,
And a threadbare velvet cloak for clothing.
His clothes ragged and torn.
فاشمخْso hold yourself high بأنفِكَwith your nose تيهاًin pride
وعشْand live بنفسٍwith a soul شريفَهْnoble

فقلتُso I said نفسيmy soul شريفَهْnoble

والموتُand death عدلٌjust يسوِّيmakes equal
بينيbetween me وبينَand between الخليفَهْthe caliph

And death is the justice,
Between me and the caliph.
That makes the caliph and I equal.
