جنكيَّةٌa female harpist شاهدْتُI saw عاشقَهاher lover
جنكيَّةٌ شاهدْتُ عاشقَها
وهمْand they بهاbecause of her فيin الجَوْرِoppression والضنكِand hardship
وهمْ بها في الجَوْرِ والضنكِ
A female harpist—I saw her lover,
A jinniya I saw with her lover
And they were, because of her, in oppression and hardship.
As they reveled in joy and delight
قالتْshe said أماdo you not تعشقُlove جنكيةًa female harpist
قالتْ أما تعشقُ جنكيةً
قلتُI said كذاjust so ياoh ليتنيif only I were جنكيa male harpist
قلتُ كذا يا ليتني جنكي
She said, “Do you not love a female harpist?”
She said, "Do you not love a jinniya?"
I said, “Just so—oh, if only I were a harpist!”
I said "I wish that I were a jinni!"
