قالَsaid لهاto her الشيخُthe old man واصلينيbe intimate with me
قالَ لها الشيخُ واصليني
قالتْshe said أقلنيspare me الوصالintimacy للهْfor God's sake
قالتْ أقلني الوصال للهْ
The sheikh said to her, “Grant me union.”
The old man said to her, 'Be intimate with me.'
She said, “Spare me this union, for God’s sake!
She said, 'Spare me intimacy, for God's sake!
ماnot يطلعُrises البدرُthe full moon فيin نهارٍdaylight
ما يطلعُ البدرُ في نهارٍ
وطاقتيand my window ماnot تحبُّlikes شلهْa skein (uncertain reading)
وطاقتي ما تحبُّ شلهْ
The full moon does not rise by day,
The full moon does not rise by day,
and my vigor has no love for frailty.”
and my window does not like a skein.'
تبسَّمتْshe smiled ليat me وقالتْand she said
تبسَّمتْ لي وقالتْ
جرِّبْtry وصاليmy love سُوَيْعَهْa little while
جرِّبْ وصالي سُوَيْعَهْ
She smiled at me and said,
She smiled at me and said,
“Try union with me for one little hour.”
'Try my love for a little while.'
فقلتْthen I said كيفَhow فقالتْthen she said
فقلتْ كيفَ فقالتْ
سُتَيْتَةٌa little six بسُبَيْعَهْwith a little seven
سُتَيْتَةٌ بسُبَيْعَهْ
So I said, “How?” She said,
Then I said, 'How?' And she said,
“A little six with a little seven.”
