إذاif كانis المحبُّthe lover قليلَpossessing little مالٍwealth
إذا كان المحبُّ قليلَ مالٍ
فماthen ... not أيامُهُhis days إلاexcept ليالِnights
فما أيامُهُ إلا ليالِ
If the lover has little wealth,
If the lover has little money,
Then his days are nothing but nights.
His days are but nights.
لقدْindeed هانَis held in contempt المقلُّthe poor man علىin the eyes of البراياhumankind
لقدْ هانَ المقلُّ على البرايا
فلمْso ... did not يخطرْoccur لمخلوقٍto any creature ببالِin mind
فلمْ يخطرْ لمخلوقٍ ببالِ
Indeed, the poor man is held in contempt by humankind,
The poor man has become cheap in the wilderness,
So he never crosses anyone's mind.
And it occurs to no soul.
وأصبحَand becomes بينَamong أهليهِhis own kin غريباًa stranger
وأصبحَ بينَ أهليهِ غريباً
طويلَlong الهجرِestrangement منبتَّsevered الحبالthe cords
طويلَ الهجرِ منبتَّ الحبال
And he becomes a stranger among his own kin,
And he becomes a stranger among his family,
Long forsaken, with his ties severed.
With long estrangement, where affection is cut off.
