    If you would counsel me, then strengthen my patience.

    Against an envier whose worth is nothing like mine.

    My patience with the envier endures my whole life—

    Worse for him than the sparks of glowing coals.

    يشهر ذكري ويزيدُ أجري

    My breast is not constricted by my envier;

    He spreads my fame and increases my reward.

    My envier wished to open the door of evil,

    That his glass and my pearl might be made equal.

    His glass can be fused again after breaking,

    But once a pearl is broken, there is no mending it.

    Alas for my envier when he comes to know

    My past—my present, I mean, or my imperative.

    None of that ever crosses my mind,

    While he has never ceased to be occupied with my fame.

    My greatest sin in his eyes, and my burden,

    Is that I am spoken of in every land—

    يُسمعُ ذكرُ عمرَ المعري

    In the East, in Syria, and throughout the realm of Egypt;

    The fame of ʿUmar al-Maʿarrī is heard.
