وكنتُ إذا رأيتُ ولو عجوراً
يبادرُit hastens بالقيامِto rise علىwith الحرارةْardor
يبادرُ بالقيامِ على الحرارةْ
And once, whenever I saw even a cucumber,
When I used to see even a cripple,
it would hasten to rise with ardor;
Stand up eagerly to greet me,
فأصبحَbut now it is لاnot يقومُrising لبدرِfor a full moon تمٍّfullness
فأصبحَ لا يقومُ لبدرِ تمٍّ
كأنَّas though النَّحسَill fortune قدْindeed وليَhad assumed الوزارةْthe ministry
كأنَّ النَّحسَ قدْ وليَ الوزارةْ
but now it does not rise for a moon in its fullness,
Now even the full moon cannot make them rise,
as though ill fortune had assumed the ministry.
As if misfortune itself has taken office.
