باللهِBy God إنْif غنيتهِمْyou sang to them فتبرقَعيthen veil your face
باللهِ إنْ غنيتهِمْ فتبرقَعي
ياO نزهةَdelight of الأسماعِthe ears لاnot الأبصارِthe eyes
يا نزهةَ الأسماعِ لا الأبصارِ
By God, if you sing to them, veil your face,
In God's name, though you sang to them, my songs were lost on them.
O delight of the ears, not of the eyes!
Oh, delight of ears, not eyes!
غنيتِyou sang سافرةًunveiled لهمْto them فقلوبهُمْso their hearts
غنيتِ سافرةً لهمْ فقلوبهُمْ
فيin جنةٍparadise وعيونُهُمْand their eyes فيin نارِfire
في جنةٍ وعيونُهُمْ في نارِ
You sang to them unveiled, so their hearts
You sang plainly to them, yet their hearts
are in paradise, and their eyes in fire.
Are in paradise while their eyes are in hellfire.
