فإنْfor if فقتُI surpass القديمَthe earlier poet حمدْتُI praise سيريmy progress
And I steal whatever meanings I can;
I steal what meanings I can
For if I surpass the earlier poet, I praise my progress.
If I fall short of the ancients, I praise my path
وإنْand if ساويتُI equal مَنْthose who قبليbefore me فحسبيthen enough for me
مساواةُequality with القديمِthe earlier poet وذاand this لخيريfor my benefit
And if I equal those before me, enough for me
If I equal those before me, that suffices me
Is equality with the earlier poet—and that is to my benefit.
To equal the ancients is a boon for me
وإنْand if كانَis القديمُthe earlier poet أتمّmore complete معنىin meaning
فذلكَthen that مبلغيmy limit ومطارُand the flight range of طيريmy bird
And if the earlier poet is fuller in meaning,
If the ancients perfected the meaning more
Then that is my limit and the range of my bird’s flight.
That is my goal and my wings' flight
وإنَّand indeed الدرهمَthe dirham المضروبَminted باسميin my name
أحبُّdearer إليَّto me مِنْthan دينارِthe dinar of غيريsomeone other than me
And indeed, the dirham minted in my name
A coin minted with my name
Is dearer to me than someone else’s dinar.
Pleases me more than another's dinar
