وكمْand how much فيهِin it مِنْof نفعٍbenefit عظيمٍgreat ومِنْand of ضررْharm
I marveled at a thing that everything fears.
I am amazed by something, everything fears it
And how much great benefit and harm it holds!
Yet it provides great benefit and great harm
لهُit has وجنةٌa cheek محمرَّةٌreddened وذوائبٌand tresses
طوالٌlong وعنقٌand a neck لاnot يلابُسُهُaffects it قصرْshortness
It has a reddened cheek and tresses
It has a reddish mane and a long tail
Long, and a neck untouched by shortness.
A long neck not confined by a collar
وسعيٌand movement بلاwithout رجلٍa leg وبطشٌand violent striking بلاwithout يدٍa hand
وحقدٌand rancor بلاwithout قلبٍa heart وأكْلٌand eating بلاwithout ثغرْa mouth
And movement without a leg, and striking without a hand,
It moves without legs and strikes without hands
And rancor without a heart, and eating without a mouth.
Malice without a heart, feeding without a mouth
لهُit has فردُa single عينٍeye فيin وجوهٍfaces كثيرةٍmany
ومِنْand among عجبٍwonders أنْthat ليسَis not يوصفُis described بالعورْas one-eyed
It has a single eye amid many faces,
A single eye in many faces
And, wondrously, is not called one-eyed.
Strangely, it is not described as blind
لهُit has نقطةٌa dot سوداءُblack مِنْfrom فوقِabove رأسِهِits head
وهذاand this لعمريby my life حليةُthe adornment of الحيَّةِthe serpent الذكَرْthe male
It has a black dot above its head,
A black dot above its head
And this, by my life, is the male serpent's adornment.
By my life, it is the adornment of the male serpent
وسرَّتُهُand its navel بالمعنيينin both senses كنخلةٍlike a palm tree
سحوقٍtowering وخيرُand the best اللغزِriddle ماthat which حيَّرَbaffles الفكرْthought
And its navel, in both senses, is like a palm tree
Its secret has two meanings, like a date palm
Towering high; the best riddle is one that baffles thought.
Soft and ripe, the best riddle perplexes the mind
تراهُyou see it نهاراًby day كالبعوضةِlike a mosquito خسَّةًin insignificance
وبالليلِand by night كالطودِlike a mountain الذيthat طالَgrew tall واشمخرْand towered
By day you see it as insignificant as a mosquito,
By day it seems a worthless fly
And by night, like a mountain that grew tall and towered.
By night like a towering, haughty pillar
علىdespite أنَّهُthat it is حاميprotector of الحمىthe protected domain ويضيعُand is ruined مَنْwhoever
يجاورُهُlives beside it هذانthese two ضدانِopposites فيin النظرْreflection
Yet it guards the domain, while ruin befalls whoever
Though it guards the protected, it destroys those
Lives beside it: these are two opposites upon reflection.
Who live near it, two opposites to behold
يعجُّit clamors ويُبديand reveals أنَّةًa groan وتحرُّقاًand burning anguish
علىover أهلِهِits people حتىuntil يلينَsoftens لهُfor it الحجرْstone
It clamors, revealing a groan and burning anguish
It boils and shows vexation and burning
Over its people, until stone softens for it.
Against its people until even stone yields to it
إذاif أبدلواthey replace بالباءِwith bāʾ حرفَthe letter of ختامِهِits ending
ترىyou see اسماًa noun وفعلاًand a verb ثمthen حرفاًa particle (also a lean she-camel) لهit has وبرْfur
If they replace its final letter with bāʾ,
If you change the last letter to a "ba"
You see a noun and a verb, then a 'particle' with fur.
You see a name, verb, then a letter and righteousness
وتصحيفُهُand its dot-altered form ياO أيهاyou العدلُthe just man جارحٌa bird of prey
فإياكَso beware منهُof it فَهْوَfor it is كالوخزِlike pricking بالإبرْwith needles
And its dot-altered form, O just man, is a bird of prey;
But to misspell it, O just one, is harmful
So beware of it, for it is like pricking with needles.
So beware, it pricks like a needle
وإنَّand indeed لهُit has ضداًan opposite هوَit is الخلدُeternal Paradise فاعجبواso marvel, all of you
لخلْدٍat a mole لهُit has عينانِtwo eyes فَهْوَfor it is منَamong العبَرْlessons
And it has an opposite, eternal Paradise—so marvel
It has an opposite, which is eternity, so marvel
At a mole with two eyes: it is a lesson to ponder.
At an eternal one with two eyes, it is wondrous
إذاif لمnot تجدْyou find فيin جنةِthe Garden of الخلدِEternity حلةًa robe
فحذركَthen beware ياO مسكينُpoor soul تلقاهُyou will meet it فيin سقرْSaqar (Hell)
If you find no robe in the Garden of Eternity,
If you do not find respite in the garden of eternity
Then beware, O poor soul: you will meet it in Saqar.
Poor soul, beware you meet it in Hellfire
فياso O ناظراًone pondering فيin اللغزِthe riddle لوif رمتَyou sought كشفَهُuncovering it
رجعْتَyou would return إلىto القولِthe saying الذيthat قالَهُhe spoke it عمرْUmar
So, O ponderer of the riddle, if you sought to uncover it,
So you who ponder the riddle, if you tried to uncover it
You would return to the saying that Umar spoke.
You would return to the words spoken by Omar
