May God preserve the life of mine that passed in Maʿarra,
Allah gave me a life of contentment in Ma'arra which has passed
Mirrored by the lightning's smile when it flashed.
As told by the smile of lightning when it flashed

And a season of youth I spent in slumber,
And the prime of my youth I spent sleeping
In the land of Ḥandūthīn, in that open expanse.
In the land of Hunduwiyin in that expanse

O reproacher, had I seen the gate of her gardens,
I would blame, if I saw the door of its paradise
You would never have forbidden me, but urged me on.
I would not have been once forbidding but rather enticing

And had you seen the clarity of the spring of Maʿrāthā,
And if the eye of Ma'arrath saw its clarity
You would have grown docile, free of angry reproach.
You would become appeased from the anger of blame

Describe for me springs overflowing at their sources;
Describe to me eyes overflowing with springs
I will show you eyes overflowing with tears.
I will show you eyes overflowing with tears

أخافُ منَ الأشواقِ أن تتقضقضا
Do not rush to speak of al-Baydarayn, for my ribs—
And begin not with grapes so my ribs pain
I fear that longing will make them crack apart.
I fear longing will shatter me to pieces

And do not, you two, mention Jaryā and places like it to me.
And flow not the mention of its flowing river and the like
My Lord, may rain shower on her, water her, and make her lush.
My Lord sent rain so it surged and calmed

So her pistachios, when their mouths smile,
So its pistachio smiles at the smile of its lips
Laugh with lightning that has shone at Dhū al-Aḍā.
Laughing at lightning which lit up Thul Asa

And her citadel, to me, though her people have departed,
And its castle seemed to me, though its people appeared
Seems longer and broader than my sleepless vigil for her.
Taller than Suhayd standing over it, broader

And ʿAyn Zurayq—I thirst for its water;
And the eye of Zurayq looks to its water angrily
Have you not seen the water's hue, blue and white?
Did you not see the blue hue of the water, white

How much sweetness there is in Qulaylāt al-ʿUsayl,
And how sweet are the few sips for the thirsty one
Though it seems salty to one who passes with averted eyes.
Even if it tastes bitter to one who passes indifferent

And my longing for the lights of Joshua's shrine
And my longing for the lights of Yusha's scene
Is the yearning of one for whom the vast expanse has grown narrow.
Is the longing of one whose expanse narrowed

Had I roamed the valley of Dayr Simʿān for an hour,
And if I knew the valley of Saint Simeon's monastery for an hour
I would have slaked my longing at ʿUmr al-Riḍā.
I would pour out a lifetime's contentment

And oh walker in the Persian King's kingdom on foot
Blessed are you; turn away from the king of Persia.
You were fortunate so be not indifferent to the Persian King's kingdom

Long has it been since I knew al-Hirmās; its water,
Indeed my time at Hirmas has been long and its water
Whenever it flows, is like a red sword unsheathed,
When it flows is like an unsheathed red sword

Like the wrist of a lovely maiden who hennaed it and gestured
Like the wristbands of Khawd whose blood colored them
With it, in a fine-silk tunic fallen into folds.
As it waved in silken garments and unraveled

How fearsome al-Hirmās is when it roars, foaming,
So Hirmas is awe-inspiring if it foams turbulently
There, setting about cutting off the road!
With this and cutting off the road it contends

It resembles wine—far be it from that!—yet this is lawful,
It narrates wine, far from it, for this is lawful
Purifying, permitted, and approved for worship.
A pure drink, permitted for worship by the Most Pleased

When the east wind polishes its surface, it comes
When the morning breeze polishes its surface
Ruffling a garment gilded and silvered.
It comes to stroke a gilded and embroidered robe

On its two banks stand great trees—no, rather brides,
On its banks are sand dunes or rather brides
Seeking to shake themselves so as to scatter pearls.
Who intend to scatter pearls and shake them off

And a garden whose praise of its clouds grew sweet,
And a meadow whose clouds this morning left fragrant
Its violets resemble a silvered little cheek.
With its violets telling of the purplish red earth

And a commanding fair one, girded with a gleaming sword,
And a languishing blonde adorned with a blonde

Dyes of many colors, and eyes of narcissus,
The colors of flowers and the coquettish eyes of narcissus
Brazen, their eyelids refusing to close.
A wanton whose eyelids refused to blink

And the anemone tore its robe away, like a bereaved mother,
And clematis split open its garment like birthmarks
She wears blood-red robes that are never shed.
Upon it are clothes not to be removed for blood

So what are the bend, the slope, the bān trees, the sand ridge?
What is the bend, the foot, the slope, the grove, the meadow
And what is Rāma beside Maʿarra—what are the ghaḍā shrubs?
And what is the pasture at Ma'arra, what is joy?

By God, I shall prefer no place on earth
By God, I have favored no land above it
Above her, save what God has favored and approved.
Other than what Allah has favored and approved

Her sweetness is her predicate, and she is the subject;
It has news of its fragrance so it is a beginning
So her high standing could never, in my eyes, be lowered.
Its elevation was not brought down in my view

She was not built between the Euphrates and Jilliq
And it was not built between Euphrates and Jalliq in vain
In vain; this was only for a secret purpose that required it.
But rather this was for a purpose intended

Pastures of white gazelles, springtime homes of neighbors,
Pastures of Aram, plains of Jirrah
Playgrounds of gazelles, haunts to be cherished.
Playing grounds of gazelles, places of contentment

And to God a lifetime that has passed elsewhere.
And to Allah belongs a life elsewhere that has passed

No other place became, with my consent, a substitute
And nothing was its replacement to my contentment
For her; yet time has always made one stumble.
Except that fate persistently ruins

He allotted her to another and tried me with love of her;
He decided it for another and tested me with love of it
So praise be to Him for His trial of me and what He decreed.
So praise to Him for what He tested me with and decided

Sees contentment like discontent, and discontent like contentment
